Don't Wait If You Suspect Hearing Loss

Learn about the consequences of hearing loss

As we grow older, the deterioration of auditory functions (presbycusis), or hearing loss, becomes more common. Presbycusis can be caused by noise exposure, ototoxic drugs, medical disorders, aging or a combination of these.

Presbycusis can start at any time after the age 19, however, it typically starts in males at the age of 32, and at age 37 in females.

By the age of 65, almost 60% of all Americans have enough hearing loss to warrant the use of a hearing aid. That number jumps to 80% by the age of 75.

Regardless of age or gender, presbycusis is a frustrating disorder that you or someone you know may be unwilling to acknowledge or bring up on their own.

Hearing loss has negative effects for both the individual with the loss, as well as for family and friends. The impact of loss of hearing on the quality of your life can be significant, as you can see in the list below.

If you suspect that you or a loved one has a hearing loss, don't hesitate. A detailed audiological exam is needed to diagnose presbycusis, or any hearing loss.
